Canvas Painting For Beginners

by Black Cat Canvas on

Canvas is the typical artists’ support, and offers a range of advantages over paper.

It’s much more durable, and can ensure your work lasts for years and even decades – so it's worth taking the time to understand this approach, something Black Cat Canvas can help with!

Which Canvas Should I Buy?

it’s important to keep in mind when choosing a canvas that you get what you pay for. Linen offers a far superior surface to paint on due to its greater strength and finer surface, in comparison to cotton. If we had the choice, we'd always aim for fine linen primed with an oil primer to provide a lovely smooth and non-porous surface. But if you're someone who is just getting started with canvas painting, you’d be better off choosing a cheaper cotton canvas to experiment on first. You can always improve a cheap pre-made cotton canvas by re-priming with an oil primer.

A component of canvas painting that artists often miss is the tiny bag of wooden wedges provided with each canvas, which are very important but often thrown in a drawer. These wedges are designed to be hammered into the holes on internal corners of your canvases to create tension on the canvas surface, something that is vital to ensure a firm surface so you can manage and control your brushstrokes. You also might want to consider a good rubber mallet for knocking in your wedges without damaging the stretcher bars!

Canvas Painting For Beginners

When you’ve got your kit prepared and you’ve chosen your canvas, it’s time to start painting! Woo! How to approach this depends heavily on what kind of paint you're using. Here’s some tips we’ve gathered to prepare you for various kinds of paints:

Oil painting

Working in oils can feel daunting, and to master oil painting requires knowledge of certain techniques you might not be accustomed to. It’s important to:

- Hold the paintbrush correctly

- Master your brush orientation

- Vary your pressure

- Harness the power of the painting medium

- Keep your colours pure

- Use two-colour mixtures if possible

- Don’t over-mix

- Don’t skimp on paint

- Try wet-on-wet versus dry brush

- Don’t forget the palette knife

Acrylic painting

Acrylic paints dry fast and can either be used straight from a tube or thinned with water and used more like a watercolour. Here’s some tips to help you:

- Have a good variety of brushes

- Understand the different types of acrylic paint

- Know your colour wheel when mixing paints, and mix thoroughly

- Mist your paints regularly to keep them from drying

- Use a gel medium to achieve a nice glaze

- Use wet in wet and over dry to build texture
